FDA Launches Campaign to Educate about Pain Reliever Side Effects
On January 22, 2004, the FDA launched a national education campaign to provide advice on the safe use of over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief products. "Pain relievers and fever reducers are safe drugs when used as directed, but they can cause serious problems when used by people with certain conditions or those who are taking specific medicines," said FDA Commissioner Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D. Products containing acetaminophen can cause harmful side effects, like liver toxicity, when taken under certain circumstances.
American Liver Foundation Reports on Acetaminophen Side Effects
In a position statement, the American Liver Foundation noted reports of unintentional or accidental hepatotoxicity resulting from ingestion of acetaminophen, with liver failure and death in more than 20 percent of such reports. These severe side effects often occurred in moderate to heavy alcohol users. Most of the persons experiencing such side effects reportedly exceeded the 4gm/24hour limit recommended by the manufacturer, although some persons did report taking doses within this limit. In its position statement, the American Liver Foundation states that a practical and safe dosage limit for acetaminophen has not been established, but is likely to be lower than previously thought.
